Joni Rae Heckendorf, of Merrill, passed away peacefully at her home on December 3, 2025, under the care of Aspirus Hospice and her loving family. She was 67 years old. Joni was born on March 9, 1958, in Lake Mills Wisconsin to Frank and Janet Alvin.
On October 4, 1997, Joni married Richard Heckendorf Sr., who survives her.
Joni’s greatest passion was working in her yard, where she found peace and joy in creating beauty around her home. She also loved traveling to NASCAR races and exploring new places, making memories with family and friends along the way. Joni was known for her love of conversation, her huge smile, and a laughter that could fill the room, leaving joy wherever she went.
She is survived by her loving mother, Janet; two daughters: Amy Graap of Milwaukee and Ashley Graap of Little Chicago; and her step-sons: Richard (Carrie) Heckendorf Jr. of Merrill and Darrin (Sara) Heckendorf of Merrill.
Joni was a proud grandmother to seven grandchildren: Zoey Sabatke, Clay Sabatke, Joshua (Abbey) Plautz, Dawson (Alli) Heckendorf, Kaitlyn Heckendorf, Desmond (Taylor) Heckendorf, and Dakota (Alexis) Heckendorf of Wausau. She was also blessed with nine great-grandchildren: Paisley, Holden, Bennett, Rowen, Max Heckendorf, and Avery, Arya, Asher Plautz.
She is further survived by her siblings: two brothers, Kenny of Merrill and Jimmy of Wausau; and two sisters, Debbie of Merrill and Jodi (Randy Gipple) of Merrill.
Joni will be sadly missed by her family and friends. In accordance with her wishes, there will be no funeral services.
Her laughter and smile will live on in the hearts of all who knew her.
