Posted

A 69-year-old Merrill man died after being struck by a vehicle at the intersection of Grand Ave. and N. Genesee St. on Sunday night, Sept. 27, 2026, according to a media release from the Merrill Police Department.
Emergency crews were called to the intersection at about 9:15 p.m. for a crash involving a vehicle and a pedestrian. When they arrived, bystanders were already performing lifesaving measures, and emergency personnel took over. The pedestrian did not respond to those efforts and was pronounced dead at the scene by Lincoln County Coroner Val Caylor, police said.
He was later identified as Steven Strom of Merrill.
The driver, a 17-year-old male, has cooperated with investigators, according to the release. Police said how the crash happened remains under investigation.
Merrill Police Chief Corey Bennett asked the public not to speculate or spread rumors about the circumstances of the crash.
“Those involved and the families of those involved deserve factual information,” Bennett said. “Our mission is to provide those facts with a thorough investigation.”
The Merrill Police Department was assisted at the scene by the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office, Merrill Fire Department and EMS, and the Wisconsin State Patrol Technical Reconstruction Unit. The incident is still under investigation.
