Gary, age 78, passed away peacefully on February 24, 2026, surrounded by family, at Veterans Home at King.
Gary was born on May 22, 1947 to Christian and Dorothy Merkel in Merrill Wisconsin.
Gary graduated from Merrill High School. Gary was a proud veteran on the United States Marines, to include deployment in Vietnam. He also worked at the paper mill.
Gary enjoyed his time in the Arizona heat with the love of his life, (wife) Patricia. He loved his animals, time visiting family, fishing, putting puzzles together, reading and of course bingo.
Gary is survived by two sons, Shawn (Angie) Merkel, Shannon (Stacie) Merkel both of Merrill. Two Stepdaughters, Natasha (Jake) Kummer of Reedsburg and Nova (Brad) Schultz of Princeton. Five grandchildren, Aaron, Alyssa, Macie Merkel, Bethany and Jesse Einer. Brother Bruce Merkel of Warrenville, Illinois.
Gary was preceded in death by his parents and wife Patricia Merkel.
A private burial will take place at a later date.
