In past years, Merrill has held a Good News Project electronics recycling event in conjunction with a local non-profit group (such as Kiwanis or Noon Optimists) each September. Unfortunately, this year’s fall event had to be postponed, according to Bill Weber, one of the event’s annual organizers, as they have been unable to recruit enough volunteers to hold the event on-site in Merrill. He is hopeful that they will be able to hold the event in the springtime,
In the meantime, Merrill residents can still recycle their electronics at the Good News Project’s warehouse, 1106 N. Fifth St., Wausau, each Friday between 9:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. The cost is 45 cents per pound, and they will accept “just about anything with a circuit board and/or electric cord that is smaller than a large appliance.” From DVD players, game systems, cords, Christmas lights, and stereo equipment, to blow dryers, toasters, televisions, microwaves, air conditioners, and even dorm size refrigerators, the Good News Project offers an affordable way to clean out the electronic clutter in your home, so you don’t need to wait until spring. Laptops, smart phones, and cell phones are accepted at no charge. Smoke detectors cost a flat $15 each to recycle.
The Good News Project does not accept large appliances, but advise that Yaeger Auto Salvage does. Likewise, they will not take light bulbs or batteries but recommend Batteries Plus & Bulbs will take those. And they suggest the Salvation Army or Faith in Action of Marathon County is a good place to drop off ink and toner cartridges.
