On Saturday, November 2, the Reedsburg, Wis. based Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) Fay-Robinson Chapter awarded Don Kozlowski their Annual Community Service Award at the Hatch Library in Mauston, Wis. This award was given to Don-Commander of the Hamburg Mar-Lin VFW Post 10203- for his extensive work with veterans in the Merrill/Wausau area.
In addition to organizing the posts’s annual VFW dance and fundraiser, recruiting and maintaining membership for the post, Don also arranges for memorializing local fallen veterans with a grave site honor guard. This includes firing of three volleys, taps and the presentation of the american flag. On Memorial Day, Don is in the Honor Guard for the Mar-Lin Post as they perform at 14 cemeteries. He is also very active in promoting Cup of Coffee, a weekly Wednesday gathering of 70 plus veterans at Denny’s in Rothschild.
Kozlowski also encourages and assists the attendees to register for an Honor Flight.
Don works with the youth in the area as well.
Every fall, along with other veterans, they take 5th grade students to the High Ground in Neillsville,, WI, a Wisconsin Veterans Memorial Park. He takes personal responsibility to raise and lower 5 different flags in the Merrill and Wausau area whenever it is dictated to do so. A letter written by one of his VFW officers to to the Fay- Robinson DAR Chapter stated “ Don Kozlowski is a true supporter of his fellow veterans and encourages us all, including the youth of our area, to respect and honor our veterans and our country. “
