Monday’s subsectional tournament at Wisconsin Rapids marked the end of the season for Merill’s tennis team, as the girls ultimately fell short of moving on to sectionals.
In singles play the girls had a hard time getting things to go their way, only winning two sets as a team. Sabrina Tang of SPASH defeated Anna Skoviera, 6-0, 6-0; Leah Olsen of SPASH beat Rachel Rell, 6-0, 6-0; Allison Rust of SPASH defeated Alexandra Johnson, 6-1, 6-0; and Maliyah Fiammini of Wisconsin Rapids Lincoln beat Casie McAllister, 6-0, 6-1.
The Bluejays doubles teams competed well and were able to get a win, coming from their winningest doubles team of Hailey Schult and Anna Rydeski, who finished with a team best record of 15-8 this year. The Schult-Rydeski duo defeated Brooklyn Dillingen-Krupa Petal of Marshfield, 4-6, 6-3, 6-3. In other doubles action, Mia Iwinski-Hannah Nyman of Wisconsin Rapids Lincoln beat Merrill’s Catherine Murray-Lea Beckman, 6-1, 6-2; Quinn Lodholtz-Chloe Westberg of Wausau East defeated Merrill’s Sierra Humphrey-Kamille Ament, 6-2, 6-2.
