Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office reports

A 20-year-old Tomahawk man was one of five people cited late Monday evening after a traffic stop. A deputy stopped a vehicle on North Tomahawk Avenue at Wisconsin Avenue as he had obtained information that a juvenile runaway was in it. When the deputy made contact with the driver, he noted the odor of intoxicants coming from the vehicle. Following the investigation, the driver, the 20-year-old Tomahawk man, taken into custody for violating the absolute sobriety law. The four passengers in the vehicle, all Tomahawk teens ranging in age from 15 to 19, were cited for underage drinking. The runaway was sent home with a parent.
Traffic on US Hwy. 8 in the Town of Bradley was detoured for over an hour on Tuesday evening after a semi got stuck in the middle of the highway. The incident took place at US Hwy. 8 and County Rd. L just before 5:30 p.m. The Ohio man who was operating the semi told the investigating deputy that he missed his turn to go south on US Hwy. 51 so he thought it would be safe and wide enough to turn around at the intersection of County Rd. L. When the man attempted his turn, he became stuck in the soft mud off the side of the roadway. Units from the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office as well as a Tomahawk Police Officer and Trooper from the Wisconsin State Patrol assisted in detouring traffic until the semi could be removed. There was no damage and the driver was on his way in just over an hour.
Tomahawk Firefighters along with Tomahawk EMS and deputies responded to a motor vehicle crash with reported injuries late Tuesday night in the Town of Wilson. At around 10:30 p.m., a caller reported finding a vehicle off the roadway on County Rd. CC at Dump Road that had signs that someone was injured. When emergency units arrived on the scene they found no occupants of the vehicle despite a search. About an hour after the first report a deputy found the man at a residence on County Rd. CC. The man claimed to have struck a deer hours prior to the vehicle being reported to 911. The man was cited for failing to report and failing to keep his vehicle under control.
The DNR Forest Ranger along with the Town of Russell Fire Department and a deputy were sent to a tree on fire on Wednesday morning in the Town of Russell. Just after 8:30 a.m., a passerby reported lines down and a tree on fire on State Rd. 17 north of County Rd. J. The DNR Ranger found that a tree had broken off into the lines and started the fire. Firefighters stood by until Wisconsin Public Service could rectify the problem.
Three people were injured Thursday afternoon after a two vehicle crash in the Town of Bradley. Just after 2 p.m., cell 911 callers reported the crash on US Hwy. 8 at County Rd. U. The driver of one of the pickup trucks, a 29-year-old Marinette man, told the investigating deputy that he slid on snowy roads and collided head on with the eastbound pickup truck being driven by a 36-year-old Rhinelander man. Both that driver and his passenger, a 25-year-old Rhinelander man, were injured in the crash, as was the Marinette man. All were transported by Tomahawk EMS to Ministry Sacred Heart Hospital where they were treated and released. The investigating deputy noted heavy snow and poor tires contributed to the crash. The Tomahawk Fire Department assisted at the scene.
A 49-year-old Wausau man was taken into custody early Friday morning on a traffic charge. Just before 3 a.m., a deputy was traveling on County Rd. K in the Town of Merrill when he observed in the snow that the vehicle that preceded him was crossing the center line. The deputy caught up to the vehicle and stopped it on County Rd. K at US Hwy. 51. Suspecting the man was impaired, he was asked to perform field sobriety tests. As a result of those tests he was taken into custody on a first offense of operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated. Unable to find a responsible party, the man was held in the Lincoln County Jail until Friday afternoon when he was sober enough to be released.
A 36-year-old Merrill man was taken into custody late Friday night for violating terms of his probation. At 8:30 p.m., the Wisconsin Department of Corrections requested deputies to take the man into custody for violating the rules of his electronic monitoring. Deputies found the man at his residence on County Rd. P in the Town of Pine River and arrested him. He was brought to the Lincoln County Jail and held.
A 24-year-old Tomahawk man was taken into custody early Saturday morning after a Lincoln County Deputy assisted the Oneida County Sheriff’s Office. Oneida County had asked deputies in Lincoln County to be on the lookout for a vehicle as they were concerned for the wellbeing of one of its occupants. Just before 7 a.m., a deputy found the vehicle traveling down County Rd. CC and stopped it at Hay Creek Lane. He learned that the suspect and his passenger had been involved in a physical altercation which occurred in a vehicle traveling in Oneida County. The deputy stood by with the man and kept the victim safe until an Oneida County Deputy arrived and arrested him on charges.
A tree stand was destroyed by fire early Saturday afternoon in the Town of Russell. A passerby phoned 911 and reported a fire in the woods off of Town Hall Road. When a deputy arrived in the area minutes later, he was able to find the tree stand burning and feared an explosion as a 100# LP tank was under the stand. Firefighters from the Town of Russell Fire Department responded to the scene and used an off road vehicle to reach the fire and extinguish it. A pickup truck that was parked nearby was also damaged. The occupant of the deer stand was not in it when the fire started and was not injured. The Town of Pine River Fire Department along with Tomahawk was initially requested to respond but was canceled when the fire was contained.
The Recreation Deputy reported a usual opening weekend of the gun deer season. He noted that opening day found a large amount of hunters in the woods but things slowed down by Sunday. A few trespassing complaints were phoned in but no crimes were found to have been committed. The Rec. Deputy did note that most of the hunters he spoke to had come up short so far this season.
The number of car deer crashes is down with 17 being reported this past week. Only four of those came in after the start of the gun deer season. Motorists traveling during daylight hours are urged to be extra vigilant this week as hunters are sending deer out onto the roadways.
