WPS seeking nominations for next “ambassadog”

Posted

Dog owners have until July 9, 2026, to enter their pets in Wisconsin Public Service’s search for its next “ambassadog,” the canine face of the utility’s yearlong safe-digging campaign.
WPS, which provides electric and natural gas service to the Merrill area and much of central and northeastern Wisconsin, is asking customers to submit photos of their dogs digging, or posing in a favorite digging spot. The winning dog becomes the centerpiece of the company’s campaign reminding residents to call 811 at least three days before they dig.
To enter, WPS customers can submit photos at wisconsinpublicservice.com by 11:59 p.m. July 9. The company will narrow the entries to a group of finalists, then customers will vote to choose the winner.
The winning dog will be featured throughout the year in the company’s safe-digging awareness campaign and will appear on a billboard on National Safe Digging Day, observed Aug. 11.
Last year’s winner was Pearl, of Schofield, whose safe-digging message reached customers across northeastern and north-central Wisconsin during her term, according to the company.
WPS notes that calling 811 at least three days before digging—whether for a garden, a fence, or another project—allows underground utility lines to be marked. The company said notifying Diggers Hotline is free and is required by law.
