Merrill achieves Tree City USA status for 39th consecutive year

Posted

The City of Merrill has earned Tree City USA recognition for the 39th consecutive year, continuing a legacy of urban forestry that began in the mid-1980s.
Mayor Steve Hass proclaimed October 29 as Arbor Day in Merrill, marking another milestone in the City’s commitment to tree planting and care. The Parks and Recreation Department planted more than 160 trees in 2024 and more than 100 trees this fall on city boulevards and in city parks.
“This marks our 39th year as Tree City USA, and we are very proud to achieve this tremendous honor again this year,” said Dan Wendorf, Parks and Recreation Director for the City of Merrill.
Wendorf credited Parks staff, Jim Yates, Joe Weckwerth, and Ryan Golisch for their work in planting the trees throughout the city.
“We are very fortunate to have the best Park Crew anywhere,” Wendorf said. “I don’t think people realize the amount of ground they cover each and every day in helping beautify our community.”

In his proclamation, Mayor Hass encouraged residents to plant trees to benefit current and future generations.
“We are very thankful to have such a supportive community,” Wendorf said. “Thirty-nine years as a Tree City USA speaks volumes about how we feel about our valuable trees here in Merrill.”
Wendorf noted that residents may plant trees on their own property without a permit, provided the species are on the City’s approved list in the Code of Ordinances. Trees may not be planted on public property, boulevards, or rights-of-way without an approved permit. Residents must contact Digger’s Hotline before planting to locate underground utilities.
