JoAnn “Joni” E. (Pfister) Rathjen, age 86, of Merrill, WI, passed away peacefully at home under the loving care of her family and Aspirus Hospice on May 23, 2026. Joni was born on November 15, 1939, to the late Bernard and Dorothy Pfister. She lived a life centered on family, kindness, faith, and quiet strength, and she will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved her.
Education was very important to Joni, both for herself and for her daughters. She earned her Library Science certification and dedicated many years to serving her community through education. Joni first worked at the T.B. Scott Library and later served as a librarian and computer instructor at Lincoln Elementary School in Merrill. She found great joy in helping students and adults learn, always encouraging curiosity, confidence, and personal growth. In every position she held, Joni brought compassion, professionalism, and a servant’s heart.
Faith was also a guiding force throughout Joni’s life and shaped the compassion, acceptance, and generosity she extended to everyone around her. If she saw someone in need, Joni would do whatever she could to help alleviate that need.
Joni is survived by her two daughters, Joy Rathjen of Eau Claire, WI, and Kathryn Kay (Alan) Tulppo, of Eagle River, WI; her nephew, Bernard Schoneberg, of Menominee, WI; along with extended family members, dear friends, and many members of the community who will deeply miss her gentle spirit and caring heart. Her family is especially grateful for the compassionate care and support provided by Aspirus Hospice during her final days.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Henry A. Rathjen; her daughter, Dorothy Rathjen; her parents, Bernard and Dorothy Pfister; and her brother, Duane Pfister.
Joni’s life was a testament to kindness, faith, education, acceptance, and service. Her quiet strength, creativity, gentle spirit, and compassionate heart will be remembered always by those fortunate enough to have known her.
