Duane Richard Berndt, 82, passed away on Thursday, March 19, 2026. He was born on March 28, 1943, in Merrill, Wisconsin, the town that shaped his early life and where he will be laid to rest this summer. He was preceded in death by his parents, Otto and Evelyn Berndt.
Duane proudly served his country for over two decades, first in the United States Air Force and later in the Army and Army National Guard out of Maysville, Kentucky. During his service, he worked as an F-4 mechanic and served during the Vietnam War, carrying with him a strong sense of duty, comradery and resilience throughout his life.
He is survived by his two dedicated daughters, Danah and Shannon; his loving brother, Dale; and his three adoring grandchildren, Kelsey, Emilie, and Cade. His family was the center of his world, and he took great pride in the lives they built and the memories they shared together.
Duane will be remembered for his sharp, quick wit, and impenetrable spirit. He had a way of brightening every room he walked into with an unwavering confidence and a genuine smile. He found joy in life’s simple pleasures: a card game among friends, a perfectly timed joke, and evenings spent in the kitchen sharing meals with those he loved.
As a grandfather, he passed down more than stories; he passed down a deep appreciation for the passion of life itself. He taught those around him to find joy in each moment and to never stop searching for what brings happiness. His memory will live on through the simple pleasures we continue to share, and in the laughter, warmth, and love he brought into our lives.
His memorial service will be held in Merrill, WI; arrangements are pending and will be announced in the coming weeks.
He will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.
