The Wisconsin Department of Transportation’s Division of Motor Vehicles has outlined the steps voters can take to get an ID to present at the polls if they don’t already have an accepted form of identification, such as a Wisconsin driver’s license or state ID.
Wisconsin residents are required to show identification to vote, but there is no separate “voter ID,” and a federally compliant REAL ID is not required to vote in the state.
U.S. citizens who want to confirm which forms of ID are accepted at the polls can check the Wisconsin Elections Commission website at bringit.wi.gov/do-i-have-right-photo-id.
Residents seeking their first Wisconsin ID should start at the DMV’s website, wisconsindot.gov/Pages/dmv/license-drvs/how-to-apply/id-card.aspx, to see a list of required documents. Applicants should bring those documents to their nearest DMV Customer Service Center.
Merrill residents can visit the local service center at 100 S. Mill St., Suite 103. The Merrill office is open Tuesdays and Thursdays from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Appointments are available but not required; a full list of DMV locations can be found at wisconsindot.gov/pages/online-srvcs/find-dmv/default.aspx.
U.S. citizens can also obtain, free of charge, a receipt valid for voting at the polls if their ID card isn’t ready in time for an election.
Questions about obtaining an ID can be directed to the DMV’s toll-free hotline at 844.588.1069. Questions about voter eligibility, poll locations, voter registration, or other election information can be directed to the Wisconsin Elections Commission at elections.wi.gov.
