Ascension Episcopal event shines a light on local homelessness

Posted

A new food pantry will open its doors, and local housing agencies will gather under one roof Friday, Oct. 9, 2026, during “Shining Our Light,” a community event at Ascension Episcopal Church aimed at bringing homelessness out of the shadows.
Ascension Episcopal Church is at 218 Pier St. in Merrill. The event begins at 10:30 a.m. with a ribbon cutting for the Light of Christ Pantry. From 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., visitors can meet with local resource providers, share a meal, and learn how to support neighbors facing housing insecurity. Supplies will also be provided, and organizers said everyone is welcome at the table.
The event is supported by St. Vincent de Paul, Ascension Episcopal Church, MAC House, the Merrill Housing Authority, and Haven.
Organizers are using the event to highlight how quickly a household can lose stable housing — and how local agencies have stepped in to help. Examples shared by organizers include:
• A 75-year-old woman who found an affordable, safe apartment with help from local agencies after a house fire.

• A couple who needed a place to stay while saving for a security deposit. St. Vincent de Paul helped cover the cost of a camping space.
• A family of three who lived in their car after a job loss and eviction and who sought help while working toward another home.
Organizers also noted that one setback — an injury, lost wages, car trouble, or a gap in assistance — can turn a temporary hardship into an eviction.
