What can only be described as the result of an unstoppable force meeting an immovable object, Hatchet softball faced Mosinee last Tuesday (May 3rd) in a hard-fought game that resulted in a seventh inning tie. Mosinee would get the one run they needed in the eighth to win the game. The final score was 6-5 with Tomahawk generating seven hits and committing one error. This loss puts Hatchet softball at 1-3 in the GNC and 3-5 overall.
Both teams had an explosive first inning with Mosinee getting three runs and Tomahawk responding with four runs to take the lead. Scoreless second and third innings would lead to both teams scoring another run in the fourth with Tomahawk still on top.
Mosinee would tie the game at the top of the seventh and Tomahawk would not be able to put up the one run they would need to win, officially sending the game into extra innings. Mosinee was able to plate the winning run in the eighth.
“Mosinee jumped out to an early lead, scoring three runs at the top of the first,” comments head coach John Larson. “But the Hatchets responded with four of their own in the bottom of the inning. Both teams would put a run up in the fourth to make the score 5-4 in favor of the Hatchets. It would remain that way until the seventh and the Hatchets would retire the first two batters. One out away from a HUGE GNC win, Mosinee’s lead-off hitter and best player would slap a hit to left, reach third and score on a passed ball to tie the game. Mosinee would tally one more in the eighth to steal a Hatchet victory.”
Top hitters for the Hatchets include Katy Volz with two hits, a run, a walk and an RBI; Brianna Oenning with two hits and an RBI; and Rachal Dallman with one hit, one run, a double and two RBIs. Rachel also did a great job pitching all eight innings. She struck out seven, walked two, allowed seven hits and six runs-five of them earned.
“This was an outstanding GNC game, one of the best games to date,” adds Larson. “It was a game with two talented teams competing at a very high level, making plays and treating fans to something that make athletics a special thing.
“It was a great high school softball game. If we can continue to play the way we did that night, we will be where we need to be come tournament time.”
