“Mother Nature was wrecking havoc on spring sports again this week,” said Merrill Girls Varsity Soccer Head Coach Dan Kufahl.
The team’s April 16 game scheduled against Three Lakes “was postponed due to the wind, rain, and lightning,” he said. “We were able to get both of our games in on Thursday, April 18, against Stevens Point. The rain stopped long enough for us to get our games in.” The girls traveled to the Portage County Youth Soccer Complex to play the game against SPASH.
In the Varsity soccer game, “We had a rough time matching Stevens Point’s speed and their ability to connect passes,” Kufahl said.
“We are starting to find our stride as far as the physicality side of the game, and it was great to see the ladies starting to get a feel for what being physical on the field actually means. We had a few opportunities on counter attacks where we just didn’t execute our passes well enough, and the attacks broke down before we could get in a position to finish.”
“On the defensive side of things, we played pretty well, as usual,” he said. “Ally Hoock, Addie Elliot, Evyn Schmitz, and crew held their own.”
“We had a few mental mistakes that cost us a few goals – which in a Conference game you can’t allow to happen,” Kufahl said. “Good teams will always take advantage of those mistakes.”
“Once again we had some stellar saves from our goalie and captain Anna Bowe! Miss Bowe continues to impress at the goalkeeper position!” he said. “Overall, I was super proud of how the ladies played together, kept their composure through adversity, and never gave up for 80 minutes!”
“We have another tough matchup Thursday, April 25, with Conference foe DC Everest. The ladies will be working hard all week to prepare for that.”
Box Score:
Merrill 0 @ SPASH 6
