The Merrill School Forest will be open to the public for a free Family Fun Day this Saturday, Jan. 27, 2024, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Billed as “a chance for families to enjoy the great outdoors and try different winter activities,” the event will feature two scheduled presentations as well as cross country skiing, showshoeing, sledding, and human foosball. The first presentation will be a live historic logging demonstration with Steve Lee and his horses in the lower parking lot from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m. The second will be Wildlife Ecology and Management in Wisconsin using live animals inside the lodge from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. Christian W. Cold, Wildlife Technician/Educator with the Bureau of Wildlife Management, Wisconsin DNR, will be the presenter.
Visitors can also tour the Animal Museum, the Wisconsin Logging History Museum (including outdoor features), and the Cordwood Education Center. There will be a campfire outside, perfect for roasting some marshmallows, and lunch and snacks in the main lodge from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. The event is absolutely free including free equipment rentals and free food. Bring the family for a day of fun.
The Merrill School Forest is located 10 miles north of Merrill on Hwy. 107 across from Camp New Wood County Park. As parking is limited at the school forest property, overflow parking will be at the park. If using GPS, the Google approved GPS address to help get you there is: N4740 State Hwy. 107, Merrill.
Cell phones rarely work at the property, so plan for an exciting, adventurous day “off the grid.”
Note: The event, sponsored by Merrill Area Public Schools and the Friends of the Merrill School Forest, is subject to change or cancellation in the event of harsh weather or if there is a lack of snow. Check the Merrill School Forest Facebook page for any updates.
