Is one of your New Year’s resolutions to get out and be more active? The Friends of Council Grounds State Park have the perfect way to start off the new year and help you with that goal. On Monday, Jan. 1, 2024, with the assistance of the Friends group, Council Grounds State Park will host a First Day Hike at the park just north of Merrill, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.
“The self-guided one mile hike will take place on a fairly flat loop trail beginning and ending at the enclosed shelter picnic area,” Friends group representatives said. They will provide a warming fire and fresh popcorn near the shelter building, so whether walkers are coming out for a brisk venture on New Year’s Day or a leisurely stroll through the winter forest and scenery, both will be a nice treat at the end of their trek.
A State Park vehicle admission sticker is required for vehicle admission to Council Grounds. If your plans for the new year include spending more time at any of the State Parks in Wisconsin, a season pass/sticker is the most economical way to purchase. However, day passes are also available. Either may be purchased at the Park office at the entrance into Council Grounds on the day of the event.
