Callum Wheeler’s aggressive wrestling earned him a major decision in the dual against Wausau West. Submitted photo.

On Thursday, Dec. 8, 2022, the Merrill Varsity Wrestling Team hosted a dual with Wausau West. “Merrill was edged by Wausau West 39-28,” Merrill Varsity Wrestling Coach Brian Suchocki said.
“Austin and Carson picked up third-period pins in the first two matches of the night,” he said. “After a back-and-forth match, Austin wore down his opponent to get the pin.”
“Carson jumped up a weight class and was able to wear down his opponent in the third period to get the win. Carson and Austin gave a great start.”
“Ryder followed with a nice win,” Suchocki said. “Ryder is one of our leaders and beat a solid opponent.”
“Dusty, Jon, and Brett were all able to pick up decisions for us. It was exciting to see two Freshmen get their first varsity wins,” he said. “Early in both Dusty’s and Brett’s matches, it was back and forth, but as they settled in, they took the upper hand. Dusty and Brett stayed aggressive throughout the match.”
“Jon battled back and forth in his match, then finished strong coming out with a win.”
“Callum received our only major decision of the night,” Suchocki said. “Callum was aggressive throughout and dominated his opponent.”
