Letters to the Editor

We welcome letters to the Editor, a chance for members of the community to comment on issues of concern to them. All letters must be original, not duplications of letters addressed to public officials or written by others. The views and opinions expressed are those of the letter writer and do not necessarily reflect the views of this publication, its publishers, Editor, or staff.

To the Editor:
I unapologetically admit that I spent my early years in Chicago, where traversing the city often meant traveling on the infamous CTA (i.e., Chicago Transit Authority). Anyone who has had that dubious experience can attest to its somewhat sketchy reputation. Some of the bus drivers were the incarnate of Ralph Kramden! So, imagine my surprise when I moved to Merrill a few years ago and discovered that not all transit systems are the same.
The Merrill Transit Authority, best known as the Merrill Go Round, is a wonderful way to traverse the city. The office staff is top notch, and the drivers are caring and efficient. What prompted me to write this came from a discussion with a new resident who was misinformed about this service.
No, there are not conventional “bus stops.” Just call and they will pick you up where you want. Tell them when you want to return, and they will take you back. All for an incredibly low price! They can accommodate anyone despite your mobility [issues]. Every bus is equipped with a ramp and even wheelchair seating.
It is that time of year when snow makes getting around the city challenging. Even if you have a vehicle, why not take the bus, and how about going to work?
The Merrill Go Round is a valuable resource for anyone of any age. Just in case you don’t know how to get ahold of them, the number is 715.536.7112.

To the Editor:
October 24, 2022, marked the beginning of the 100th year that the Holy Cross Sisters have resided in Merrill. Over those years, the Sisters have partnered with the city and been instrumental in addressing the needs of this community and the surrounding area. From construction and staffing of Holy Cross Hospital to tackling the rising need for elder care by turning Holy Cross Convent into Bell Tower Residence, they have committed themselves to pastoral care, healthcare, elder care, and education. The Sisters have served on numerous community boards and have volunteered through many programs to minister to those in need. Beyond that, they have promoted social consciousness of environmental protection, domestic violence, and anti-human trafficking.
My guess is that each of us has in some way been touched by the kindness, consideration, and support of the Holy Cross Sisters. Perhaps you or a family member has needed care at the local hospital, elder care (lifeline, visiting nurse, or assisted living), the food pantry, or the free clinic, to name a few. Maybe a Sister was your elementary school teacher or you attended Holy Cross High School or Junior College. In so many ways, the Holy Cross Sisters have lived the words of their founder, Father Theodosius: “The need of the time is the will of God.”
As we gather at Thanksgiving and pause to consider all that we are thankful for, please keep the Holy Cross Sisters in mind. They are God’s gift to this community. Happy Thanksgiving!
