Moellendorf receives 2022 Iris Award from NAMI

NAMI Northwoods is an affiliate of NAMI National & Wisconsin. They are a non-profit organization that provides support, education, and advocacy throughout the Marathon, Lincoln, and Langlade Counties. They advocate on behalf of individuals and families affected by mental illness. NAMI Northwoods has office space at Grace United Church at 535 3rd Ave., Wausau.
Each year, the NAMI Wisconsin Board of Directors select approximately 8-10 people to recognize at the annual conference. NAMI Wisconsin Iris Awards are given to people who stand out in their efforts, contributions, and dedication to improve the quality of life of people affected by mental illnesses and to promote recovery.

Debbie Moellendorf, a youth educator for Lincoln County from Merrill, was selected by NAMI Wisconsin’s Board of Directors to receive the 2022 Iris Award, based on a nomination from her peers. Moellendorf is recognized with this Advocacy Award for outstanding efforts to influence public policy, resource allocation, and/or beliefs within political, economic, and social systems or institutions.

During the month of May, NAMI honors Mental Health Month to continue raising awareness for mental illness. NAMI and all the affiliates join together to end the stigma of mental illness. Here are some ways that you can end stigma:
• Start a conversation about mental health
• Share your story with family, friends, colleagues, etc.
• Educate those around you
• Empower and support one another
• Be honest about your own mental health struggles

Attend Family Support Group – a peer- led support group for family members, caregivers of individuals living with a mental health condition. Support group offers education, resources, and advocacy. Support group meets at Grace United Church on the fourth Monday of the month at 7:00 p.m.

Attend NAMI Peer Support – peer-led group for anyone concerned about their own mental health. Focus is on wellness and different strategies to cope. The support group meets at 2:00 p.m., the second Monday of the month in the Fellowship Hall at Grace United Church. Another support group meets at Biggby Coffee house in Rib Mountain on the fourth Wednesday of the month at 5:30-6:30.
