Merrill Varsity Girls Softball Team takes two wins at Varsity Invitational

The Merrill Varsity Girls Softball Team headed to the Woodside Sports Complex in Mauston, Wis., on Friday, April 8, for the two-day Varsity Invitational. “After having barely two practices outside, the girls were so happy to finally be outside playing ball,” said Alison Krohn, new Merrill Girls Varsity Softball Head Coach.
In game one against Onalaska, winning pitcher Addy Schmeltzer pitched seven strike-outs from the mound. Sophie Wendorf went 3/4 with two singles and a triple; Laney Zuelsdorff went 2/4 with two singles. The Lady Jays won by a six-point lead.

Game two put the Merrill Girls up against the team from Cumberland. Despite Cumberland getting a jump on Merrill, the Bluejays “overcame an 8-0 deficit in the first inning, to piece together a 14-11 win,” Krohn said. “Everyone had a role, and we never gave up during any part of that game. I am unbelievably proud of their resilience.”
Winning pitcher Olivia Pierce struck out six; Addy Schmeltzer went 4/5 with two triples and two singles; Sophie Wendorf went 2/4 with two singles and a walk; and Olivia Losee went 2/4 with two singles and a walk.
