At a Special Board Meeting on Tuesday, April 5, 2022, the Merrill Area Public Schools Board of Education approved the retirement of Superintendent Dr. John Sample.

Dr. Sample has served the district as Superintendent for six years. Prior to this role, he was the Director of Special Education/Pupil Services for the district for eight years.

“After 34 years in public education, I knew it was time to make this personal transition,” said Sample. “While I was hoping to leave with our students receiving additional referendum support, I am still proud of the partnerships our district has established and maintained.”

Sample said June 30, 2022, will be his last day worked in the MAPS District, so July 1, 2022, will be his first official day of retirement. “I will remain involved in the community and plan to enjoy my hobbies and my privacy,” Sample said. “Otherwise, I have no specific plans other than supporting my wife, as she will remain working next school year.”

“I would like to thank Dr. Sample for his leadership and guidance of the Merrill Area School District”, said Board President Kevin Blake. “We wish him the very best in his upcoming retirement.”

Sample said the MAPS Board of Education plans to fill his position and that both internal and external candidates will likely have the opportunity to apply. Postings are made public.
