The City of Merrill Board of Canvass met on Wednesday morning, April 13, 2022, to perform a recount of the votes in the District 5 Aldermanic election. The count verified that Richard Lupton won the election, emerging the winner in the race against incumbent John VanLieshout, by a vote of 113-112. An additional nine ballots in the District were verified to not include any vote in the Alderman’s race. That race was left blank on those ballots.

Spoiled ballots were verified and four people conducted the recount, with Lincoln County City Clerk Chris Marlowe also in attendance, as well as a group of interested City employees and citizens and both candidates in observance.

“Every vote counts!” City of Merrill Deputy Clerk Kathy Unertl said at the conclusion of the meeting. “And all the votes were counted.”

Lupton won the race by just one single vote and will be Merrill’s next District 5 Alderperson.
