Spring weight limits for State and County highways

WisDOT announced weight limits for North Central Region state highways

The Wisconsin Department of Transportation (WisDOT) North Central Region announced the seasonal posting of weight limits on area state highways. The weight restrictions are six tons gross load for single axle vehicles and 10 tons gross load for tandem axle vehicles (any two axles under eight feet apart). The maximum gross weight is 24 tons.

Weight restrictions for our immediate area, effective at 12:00 p.m. on Tuesday, March 15, 2022, include:
WIS 52, Marathon County, from Little Elm Road to Shawano County line
WIS 107, Marathon County, from Marathon County A to the Lincoln County line
WIS 107, Lincoln County, from Marathon County line to WIS 64
WIS 107, Lincoln County, from Matthew’s Road to Lincoln County S
WIS 153, Marathon County, from Marathon County J to Shawano County line

Seasonal weight restrictions (springtime posted roads) are placed on specific highways during the spring thaw period. The restrictions are added to prevent damage to the pavement structure.In the event of unpredicted cold weather, the postings in each county may be delayed as conditions require and will become effective at the discretion of the State Highway Engineer.

The Lincoln County Highway Department announced weight limits for local highways

Likewise, the Lincoln County Highway Department (LCHD) announced weight restrictions for Lincoln County Highways, also effective at 12:00 p.m. on Tuesday, March. 15, 2022.

First, the LCHD announced the following roads are NOT posted: CTH K, W, U, Q, R, L, CTH A from the north City limits of Tomahawk to US Hwy. 8, CTH A east to US Hwy. 51, CTH S from US Hwy. 51 north to State Hwy. 86, CTH N from CTH L north to the railroad tracks, CTH Y from US Hwy. 8 north to the railroad tracks, CTH G west of State Hwy. 17, CTH E from State Hwy. 86 to CTH O, and CTH H from CTH K to Copper Lake Road.

ALL other County roads will be posted a maximum weight of 6 tons each axle, maximum gross weight limit 18 tons, except for CTH E from the intersections of Burn Rd. through the gravel portion will be posted at 6 tons per axle, 8 tons maximum gross weight.

Under Section 349.16(3) exemptions may be made to allow for vehicles carrying those commodities of which are used to perform necessary and vital services for the public health, safety, and welfare. In accordance with this section, school buses, vehicles transporting non-divisible perishable goods, emergency vehicles, and County maintenance vehicles are exempt from these temporary weight restrictions. Special concessions on overweight loads may be made in emergency situations on a case-by-case basis through the issuing of single-trip permits during the period of imposed restrictions.

The LCHD, in cooperation with the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Department, will allow these authorized single trips on a restricted basis over specifically-designated routes.
