Gene L. Voigt

Gene L. Voigt, age 81, of Merrill, passed away Friday October 29, 2021 at his home under the care of his family and hospice services.  Gene was born August 24, 1940, in Lincoln County, to the late Ralph and Ernestine (Kleinschmidt) Voigt. He married Phyllis Grund on September 1, 1970 in Las Vegas, Nevada. Gene worked as a bridge construction carpenter for Edward Kraemer and was a member of the local carpenter’s union. During his working career he also spent many years working as a licensed blaster at Anderson Brother’s Quarry.  Gene enjoyed watching tv sports, especially the Brewers and the Packers as well as taking an occasional casino trip with his wife and son. In his earlier years he often took his sons fishing.

Gene is survived by his wife, Phyllis Voigt of Merrill; son, Jeremy Voigt of Merrill; sisters, Dawn (Gerald) Schmidt, Darlene (David) Herdt, Carol (Mark) Pankow all of Merrill, and  Shirley Hopkins of Wausau; brothers, Ralph (Arlene) Voigt, Wayne (Virginia) Voigt, LaVerne (Linda) Voigt, all of Merrill, and Mike Voigt of Texas; brothers and sisters-in-law Rueben (Diane) Grund, Lloyd Grund, Lou Ann Grund, Brian (Karen) Grund, Mark Grund, Jerome Grund, Lynette Trapp, Timothy (Sara) Grund all of Merrill, Sharon (Tom) Radtke, and Betty (Randy) Mahn both of Wausau; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents Ralph and Ernestine Voigt; son, Anthony ‘Tony’ Voigt; brother, James Voigt; and brother-in-law, Lester Grund.

A memorial service for Gene will be held at 11:00 A.M. Friday, November 12, 2021 at St. John Lutheran Church in Merrill. Rev. David Szeto will officiate. Visitation will begin at 10:00 A.M.
