Rep. Callahan votes to limit government overreach

Vote reflects efforts to prevent government mandated vaccination and prohibit the State from closing churches
MADISON – During the floor session on Tuesday, Mar. 24, Representative Calvin Callahan (R-Tomahawk) voted to approve a package of legislation that limits government overreach by ensuring Wisconsinites have a voice in how the federal stimulus dollars are allocated, protecting their right to decide whether a vaccine is right for themselves and their family, and prohibiting state government from closing places of worship.
“I’ve spoken with many folks in the 35th Assembly District about the overreach we’ve seen from the state’s Executive Branch over the past 12 months that should have never occurred,” stated Rep. Callahan. “With this legislation we’ve passed, hopefully it never happens again.”
The Assembly also passed The Truth in Spending Act, which provides legislative oversight of federal COVID-19 relief coming to Wisconsin. It is modeled closely after the language that Democrats approved in 2009 to allow the Joint Finance Committee (JFC) to provide oversight in the distributions of funds from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009.
“Up to this point, Governor Evers has had the power to dispense billions of dollars in federal funds as he likes,” said Rep. Callahan. “With as many Wisconsinites as have been affected by COVID-19, there should be a transparent process for them to be involved in the decision-making.”
The Assembly approved the bills mostly along party lines. The legislation passed yesterday is now headed to the governor’s desk for his consideration.
The 35th Assembly District includes all of Lincoln County and portions of Langlade, Marathon, Oneida, and Shawano Counties.
