Lincoln County Sheriff Ken Schneider credited K9 Nina and her handler, Deputy Sam Steckbauer, for helping save the life of an Irma woman earlier this month.
Deputies responded to a home in the Town of Skanawan on Thursday, Mar. 18, after a woman, age 63, had been reported missing. At the time the 911 call was received, she had been missing for about 45 minutes.
According to a post on the Sheriff’s Office’s Facebook page, deputies learned that the woman may have been a danger to herself.
K9 Nina arrived on the scene and immediately began tracking through the woods near the home, the post said.
Lieutenant Timothy P. Fischer said Nina located the woman within 10 to 15 minutes of deployment, about an hour and 12 minutes from time of call. The woman had “severe injuries” when found, according to the post.
Paramedics transported the woman to a nearby landing zone, from which she was airlifted by Life Link III helicopter to the trauma center at Aspirus Wausau Hospital. Her current condition is unknown, but she was last known to be in stable condition, Fischer said.
