Grapplers fall at West

On Saturday Dec. 7, the Bluejay varsity wrestling team opened their 2020-21 season at,Wausau West; falling to the Warriors 66-14. On varsity there were seven matches wrestled and ten exhibition matches wrestled afterwards.
Picking up wins on varsity were Ryder Depies, Tyler Leistikow and Tanner Depies. Picking up wins in exhibition were Ryder, Tanner, Nik Zastrow, Malakai Wheeler, Brian Ball and Tristan Brewington.

Merrill’s Tyler Leistikow stands victorious after his come from behind victory over
Wausau West’s Nathan LaRue, on Saturday Dec.5.

“For our first time competing this year, the wrestlers did well handling the environment and the adversity of the season,” comments head coach Brian Suchocki.
“Ryder started us out with a great come-from-behind win over his opponent at the 182 pound weight class. Ryder adjusted to the match well and really looked good in the third period. Tyler followed that up at 195 pounds with a great come-from-behind victory with a third period pin over a familiar opponent. Tyler kept his composure and he fought through some tough situations and when the time was right he capitalized getting the pin,” Suchocki adds.
“Tanner dominated his opponent from start to finish getting a technical fall. Tanner came into the day wanting matches and so he was able to get two more against strong opponents in exhibition. I’m glad the wrestlers were able to compete. There are a lot of different protocols in place but the wrestling is the same; two opponents competing. The coaches are very proud of the effort from the wrestlers.”
On Saturday Dec.12 at 10 a.m. Merrill will take on the Marshfield Tigers at home. The dual will be broadcast on WJMT radio.
