Detterming finishes near top in state tournament

Merrill High School sophomore Russell Dettmering made the most of his first trip to the WIAA state golf tournament. Over the two-day event, Dettmering finished in fifth place on the Division 1 leaderboard.

Dettering carded a two-under 70 in Round 1 on Monday, tying him for second place overall and trailing the leader, Arrowhead’s Piercen Hunt, by just one stroke.

Division 1 golfers teed off at noon Tuesday for Round 2 at University Ridge Golf Course in Verona. Through the front nine, Dettmering picked up a stroke to go to three under for the tournament and tie Hunt for the lead. A triple bogie on hole 10, however, dropped Dettmering down the leaderboard. He wasn’t able to make up the strokes and finished +4 for the day and +2 overall.

Hunt and Wauwatosa’s Adam Garski tied for first place at -2, followed by a third place tie at +1 between Brock Hlinak of Kaukauna and Zach Bernhardt of Eau Claire Memorial.
