Celebrity chef featured speaker at ‘Diabetes Fest’

Marshfield Clinic is hosting celebrity TV chef Tiffany Derry on Thursday, Dec. 8, during a holiday-themed diabetes education event in Merrill.

The event is 4-6:30 p.m., at Eagles Club, 1205 Lake St. Doors open at 3:30 p.m.

Participants at this free educational event will learn about resources available to help manage and prevent diabetes, particularly during the holiday season. In 2012, 29.1 million Americans, or 9.3 percent of the population, had diabetes, according to the American Diabetes Association.

“Food is a central part of the holidays, but diabetes doesn’t have to ruin the festivities,” said Paula McIntyre, certified diabetes educator and registered dietitian at Marshfield Clinic Merrill Center. “By learning the right kind of foods and appropriate amounts to eat while carefully managing diabetes, the holidays can be a special time for everyone.”

Derry, well-known for Bravo’s “Top Chef” Season 7 fan favorite and “Top Chef All-Stars,” has appeared on Spike TV’s “Hungry Investors” and “Bar Rescue.” Derry is touring the country with Novo Nordisk educating people about healthy lifestyles and portion control. She will prepare a meal for event participants.

“With her family’s experience with diabetes, Derry always wants to teach people how to improve their cooking and food prep to make it healthier,” McIntyre said. “Participants in the events in past years said they appreciated having a professional chef show them how to make foods they like healthier.”

Limited seating is available. Make your reservations today by calling 1-800-782-8581, ext. 9-4478.
