Despite skies bearing looming thunderheads and ominously churning clouds, nearly 20 community members stood tall at the Grand Opening of the new Bierman Family Aquatic Center Wednesday afternoon.
After nearly two years in the making, Parks and Recreation Director Dan Wendorf and Bierman Family Foundation representatives were joined by Merrill Chamber  of Commerce President Debbe Kinsey, chamber ambassadors, Fire Chief Dave Savone, several members of the Merrill Fire Department as well as city administrator Dave Johnson; for the official ribbon cutting and showcase of the 12,000 square foot facility.
“The city and the parks department has done a wonderful job in building this beautiful facility in a great location,” said Bierman Family Foundation president Rick Bliese.
When asked of the foundation’s decision to contribute to the funding of the facility, Bliese cracked a smile.
“Something like this….a place for the community, and most of all a place for children to enjoy, is what Carl and Jane Bierman were passionate about. They cared deeply for their community. If they could be here today and see this for themselves, I know they would have been very pleased. We saw this as an opportunity to carry on their passion.”
“After all…” Bliese adds with a chuckle, as a handful of giggling children whisk past him.
“A city isn’t complete without a pool for the kids to spend the summer right?”
