Bluejay golfers making progress

Press Release
Last Monday (April 25) Merrill hosted a JV match against DC Everest, Wausau West and Wausau East. After a thunderstorm rolled in with sleet and wind, the boys only finished 6 holes, Merrill placed fourth with their 6 hole total. Players included Brian and Brendon Root, Mitchael Cammack, Dallas kaufman, Wesley Mcintyre and Travis Wright.
On Tuesday, Merrill participated in the Wausau City Meet at Wausau Country Club. Due to players having other commitments, only 3 of 5 players from Merrill were able to participate. Those included freshman Hunter Wallace with a solid round of 46-41=87. Hunter played well on the back side to shoot a fine 18-hole score. Other Merrill scorers included junior Tad Pike with 51-46=97 and senior Tanner Pettit with 50-50=100.
On Friday, Merrill competed in the first of seven Valley Conference matches at Pine Valley Golf Course. Leading Merrill were senior Tanner Pettit with 46-45=91, freshman Hunter Wallace with 48-46=94, senior Connor Kleinschmidt with 50-53=103, and freshman Brendon Root with 56-58-114. The Bluejay team finished seventh with a team score of 403. SPASH won the event with a 308 and the individual medalist went to Matt Tuman of Wausau East with 71.
“Despite the seventh place finish in the event, our Merrill team is making progress,” comments head coach Joe Mertens. “We should have the full five-man team during the next conference matches and that will help out standings. Tanner Pettit has worked hard to get back to form this season and appears to be close to doing just that. Brendon Root just picked up the game this spring but with  his hockey background, he has some natural golf ability and just needs to fine tune his game to improve his scoring. Hunter Wallace, also a freshman has been playing golf for a while and is showing wonderful potential. He shot a fine round of 87 at Wausau CC earlier in the week and is expected to improve on that score before the season is out.”
Merrill’s next completion on the links will be conference matches at WI-Rapids at 2:00 PM on Tuesday and Stevens Point at 2:00 PM on Friday, both away.
