Quotes/AOW from Coach John Zuelsdorf…

“…it was nice for the athletes to compete outdoors on the ‘full-size’ track. All the participants seemed to appreciate the warm weather opportunity and despite the high winds early in the meet, there were some nice performances in the field events.”

“Hannah and Dane had a solid tosses in the Discus into a head wind, Mason and Dani vaulted well, and Olivia and Orion had nice high jump efforts. All aforementioned athletes were able to compete at P.R. levels in their respective field events. We also had some of our middle distance and distance athletes running some nice strategical races using the wind to their advantage and working with it instead of fighting against it. It was very difficult for our sprinters to PR directly into the headwind; however, we were able to get some early season times and distances so that we can compare athletes and continue to make future varsity/JV meet decisions.”

“…Also, we loaded up the meet for our sprinters and distance runners, using this meet as a more of a competitive training event and most all of our athletes did the maximum allowable number of events. This can present a challenge both physically and mentally, but our athletes handled things pretty well!”

“…over the past two decades this meet continues to grow in size, now bulging to ten teams. With basically an unlimited entry format some events had to be modified slightly in order to accommodate all entrants. Bigger isn’t always better and when it took about an extra hour to complete the meet it got pretty cold towards the end. We were proud of the way our athletes handled things, with little or no complaining and being ready to race and compete when their events came up. Our last discus throwers for the girls literally tossed in almost complete darkness!”

Athlete of the Week

(Hannah Schade) “…coming off a solid performance with a PR in the Shot Put at the ‘Elite’ Meet in Eagle River last Saturday, she followed it with a PR effort in the discus at Medford. Both efforts were medalist performances and her discus effort topped the field in Medford. As a Junior, Hannah is not only now our lead thrower for the girls, her leadership with helping develop and work with our younger throwers has been awesome.”

(Mason Webster) “… Mason had his ‘plate full’ of events…he ran some great legs in all three scoring relays and had his best pole vault effort to date at 10’6”. He is the current point scoring leader on the team and can contribute in multiple events from the longer sprints to the distance events. He also keeps things ‘lighter’ and ‘fun’ for his teammates in practice!”
