The Tomahawk varsity volleyball squad sailed through their regular season finale last Tuesday in Eagle River, taking down the Northland Pines Eagles 3-1 (23-25, 25-17, 25-16 and 25-20).
“Tried a few new things to have different options when we need it,” commented head coach Paul Zierten. “The girls finally played well and overcame some lapses. I was proud of our effort and mental toughness. “Though we slacked the last few matches, I like the way we ended with our last regular season game.
“The main reason we played well was due to communication and defense stepping up when they needed to. In Game 4, we were down 18-12 and made a good comeback to win 25-20. It was a good win to send us into the postseason.”
The victory marked the third consecutive win for the Hatchets and earned the ladies a third-place finish (8-4, 22-13-1) in the ever-competitive Great Northern Conference, right behind Medford (10-2, 27-9) and Antigo (9-3, 19-19).
Fifth-seeded Tomahawk made their 2015 WIAA playoff debut Tuesday night at fourth-seeded Antigo. The winner will move on to Thursday’s bout with the winner of the Merrill-Lakeland meet.
Leaders: Colynn Behling (18K); Hanna Meyer (17K); Becca Doughty (47A); Hannah Feest (40D); Courtney Theiler (20D).
