Paul A. King, age 97, of Merrill, died Monday, August 31, 2015, at Pine Crest Nursing Home, Merrill.
Paul was born March 24, 1918, in the Town of Summit, Langlade County, son of the late George and Martha (Leistikow) King. He married Alma L. Strasdin on January 19, 1941. She preceded him in death on December 18, 1996. As a young man, Paul was involved in logging throughout the state of Wisconsin. He helped cut the last three tracts of virgin timber in the Summit Lake area in 1936-1937, using a crosscut saw. From 1939-1940, Paul worked for Scheu Logging in the Underdown area of Lincoln County. From 1940-1942, Paul worked with Harry Doering Logging in the Gleason area. Paul became a self-employed Christmas tree grower. Since 1954, Paul was one of the original members of the Wisconsin Christmas Tree Growers Association. In his free time, Paul enjoyed hunting and fishing. He was an avid Lake Trout fisherman on Trout Lake in Vilas County.
Survivors include two daughters, Darlene (Ron) Beyer of Merrill, and Barb King of Littleton, Colorado; eight grandchildren, Jody King, Tansy (Guillermo) Quesada, Erik King, Dennis (Sheila) Polak, Delmer (Tracey) Polak, Amy Matz, Michele (Clark) Ambrose, and Leah (Rich) Pellicane; and several great-grandchildren. Paul was preceded in death by his son, Donald King; his grandson, Chad Polak; two sisters, Eleanore Froehlich, and Lauretta Olson; and three brothers, Ben King, Lawrence King, and Woodrow King.
The funeral service will be held at 11:00 A.M. Saturday, September 5, 2015 at Luther Memorial Lutheran Church, Gleason. The Rev. Greg Laska will officiate. Burial will take place in Summit Cemetery, Town of Summit, Langlade County. Visitation will begin at 10:00 A.M. Saturday at the church. The Taylor-Stine Funeral Home, Merrill, is assisting the family with arrangements.
