Hatchets hit hot streak

The Tomahawk baseball team ripped off four wins last week, starting with a 3-2 edging at Lakeland last Tuesday.
Then they blew out N. Pines 14-1, Hurley 15-5, and Crandon 23-11 on consecutive days to improve to 9-8 overall and 5-4 in the GNC.
“I hope the team can carry this momentum into next week,” THS coach Wes Roessler said. “We have some big conference games coming up.”
The Hatchets’ Fletcher Schoone hit a 2-run single in the 5th to edge ahead in the Lakeland game.
“That was a huge hit that gave our team more confidence,” Roessler said. “It was an exciting game down to the last pitch.”
Jon Nyberg (7 H, 2 W, 9 K, 2 ER in 7 I) won. Lorne Ahrens (2-2, 2-2B) hit big and Jared Jarvensivu drove in the other run.
Eruption
THS jumped out with an 8-run 1st on Thursday, aided by Aaron Leonhard’s bases-clearing hit with two outs, then made it 13-1 in the 3rd.
“Our bats came to life,” Roessler said. “The top of the order really came up big with our 1-2-3 hitters combining for 8 hits and 7 runs.
“Our defense put together another solid game.”
Jarvensivu (3 H, 3 W, 7 K, 1 ER in 5 I) dominated.
Leonhard (3-4, 3 R, 4 RBI), Jarvensivu (3-4, 2 R) and Schoone (2-4, 2 R) pushed the offense to 9 hits.
Midget mash
A 9-run 2nd answered a 3-2 deficit, and 3 more in the 3rd nearly capped off Tomahawk’s 15-5 triumph over Hurley.
“It was a nice win for the team,” Roessler said. “Our bats stayed hot, but the defense needs to be sharper.”
Joe Heiner (7 H, 1 W, 3 K, 5 R, 4 ER in 5 I) pitched the win. Jordan Roessler (3-3, 3B, 4 RBI), Jarvensivu (3-4, 2B, 3 R, 2 RBI), Peter Kleinschmidt (1-1, 2 R, 3 RBI) and Schoone (1-2, 2 R, 2 RBI) bumped a 10-hit offense.
Cranberries
The Hatchets also kicked off Saturday’s game with an 8-run 1st, but Crandon didn’t go away, cutting it to 12-8 by the 2nd. So THS put up a 9-run 4th.
“Peter took a beating at the plate, getting hit three times, but he scored all five times,” Roessler said.
Roessler (2-2, 2 R, 4 RBI), Jarvensivu (2-4, 3 RBI), Kleinschmidt (1-1, 3 HBP, 5 R, 2 RBI) and Leonhard (1-3, 2 B, 3 R, 2 RBI) hit. Chris Schoone (4 H, 5 W, 2 K, 8 R, 0 ER in 2 I) won and Kleinschmidt (2 H, 1 W, 5 K, 1 R in 2 I) and Roessler (1 H, 3 W, 1 K, 1 R in 1 I) relieved.
