The Hatchet baseball team jumped out to a solid start, taking last Tuesday’s opener by a 5-2 tally over Wittenberg, before splitting a wild Thursday double-header with Medford. Tomahawk dropped to .500 on the early season with a first game 15-4 loss to Medford. But the THS boys bounced back in a big way with a 16-6 nightcap.
A seven-run second made it 7-2, although the Red Raiders did pull within 7-5 by the fifth inning. Tomahawk put the kibosh on that rally by scoring two in the sixth and seven in the seventh while stopping Medford cold.
Five Hatchets offered multi-hit games including Jared Jarvensivu (3-6, 4 RBI, 3 R), Fletcher Schoone (2-3, 3 R, 2 W), Dylan Brietzke (2-4, 4 RBI, 2 R), Jordan Roessler (2-4, 3 RBI, 2 R) and Dylan Schiltz (2-4, 2 R).
Jarvensivu (4 H, 6 W, 3 K, 5 R, 2 ER in 4-2/3 I) picked up the win, and Roessler (3 H, 0 W, 4 K, 1 ER in 2-1/3 I) closed it out. The Hatchets reached a trio of Medford pitchers for 13 hits and 7 walks.
Unbelievably, the opening game was a 1-1 battle through five innings. The Raiders exploded for 14 runs in the top of the sixth and Tomahawk managed three in the bottom half.
Kyle Nicks (2B, HR, 6 RBI) and Harrison Davis (3-4) helped Medford work a dozen hits. The Hatchets were held to four hits. Jarvensivu doubled in a 2-4 game.
Peter Kleinschmidt (6 H, 5 W, 4 K, 6 R, 3 ER in 5-1/3 I) was saddled with the loss, and Joe Heiner (6 H, 9 R, 5 ER in 2/3 I) capped it off. Medford’s Darrin Leonhard (4 H, 4 W, 7 K, 4 R, 1 ER in 6 I) won.
Credit where credit is due
Tomahawk jumped on the Chargers for a 5-0 lead in three innings with pairs of tallies, then held on by limiting Wittenberg to single scores in the fourth and seventh innings.
Brietzke batted 2-3 with a double and drove in a score. Schiltz was 1-2 with a double, RBI and run. Peter Kleinschmidt also went 1-2 as THS tallied five hits.
Fletcher Schoone (4 H, 2 W, 2 K, 2 ER in 7 I) pitched in gem. His defense committed just one error, while the Chargers kicked around four. Just two of the THS runs were earned.
