Merrill man killed in motorcycle-deer crash

The Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office continues to investigate the fatal motorcycle crash that occurred early Sunday morning in the Town of Rock Falls.

At about 12:05 a.m., the County 911 Center received a call reporting that a motorcyclist had struck a deer on Highway 107 north of County Highway E in the Town of Rock Falls. The initial call stated that two people were injured with one victim conscious and the other unconscious but breathing.

Lincoln County Sheriff’s deputies and Merrill Fire Department EMTs responded to the scene.

A preliminary investigation showed that a 2004 Ural motorcycle being operated by 54- year old Mark W. Schmidt of Merrill struck a deer. His wife, 52-year old Cynthia C. Schmidt was a passenger in a sidecar.

Mark Schmidt was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash while Cynthia C. Schmidt was flown from the scene by helicopter to Aspirus Wausau Hospital where she remains in critical but stable condition in the critical care unit.

This is the second fatal motor vehicle crash on Lincoln County roadways in 2010 and the accident remains under investigation.
