Relay for Life a success: 18 teams help to create a world with more birthdays

The annual American Cancer Society Relay For Life of Merrill raised $88,000 to support the Society’s mission of saving lives from cancer, leaving many volunteers exhausted, but happy, after walking numerous miles at the Lincoln County Fairgrounds.

“Through their hard work in preparing for the event, and by spending hours walking for the cause, Merrill residents certainly did their part to help the American Cancer Society create a world with less cancer and more birthdays,” said Teri Chladek, volunteer chair for the 2010 Relay For Life.

The top fundraising team was Church Mutual, led by Laurie Humphrey, which raised $10,375.52. Other teams who participated in this year’s event were: A New Beginning, Bell Tower Residence, Birthday Club Girls, Champ’s Busy Bee’s, Courtside Furniture, Eagles Club, Good Samaritan, Harrison Hills/ATV Ham Radio Club, Lincoln Community Bank, M&I Bank, Marshfield Clinic, Merrill Teachers Association, Our Saviour’s Good Neighbors, Park City Credit Union, Shotskies of Schults, Walgreens, and Wal-Mart.

More than 300 people, and 18 teams, participated in this year’s Relay event. The volunteer planning committee spent many months prior to the event planning for this event.

“A very special thank you to all committee members and team captain who helped make this event successful,” Chladek said.

The teams were comprised of area families, faith-based groups, businesses, clubs and other organizations.

“Many people in our community alone will face a cancer diagnosis this year,” said Chladek, “And, it’s critical that we come together during Relay to help the American Cancer Society achieve its mission of saving lives by helping people stay well, by helping people get well, by finding cures and by fighting back.”

The American Cancer Society Relay For Life of Merrill was made possible by Marshfield Clinic, Ministry Health Care, Holy Cross Sisters, Church Mutual, Dave’s County Market, The Woller Family, and FM Enterprises.
