Students attending Kate Goodrich got a two day jump on getting familiar with their teachers and classrooms Monday with a Kick-Off Picnic and Supply Drop Off.
The event, which ran from 4-7 p.m., was a chance for parents to drop off supplies and meet their child’s teacher and tour the classroom. In addition, a presentation was made to everyone by the PTO, encouraging parent support and involvement in PTO sponsored events throughout the school year.
Because the school was selected to receive a five-year 21st Century Grant for after school programs. that will provide $70,000-$100,000 to be spent on activities, transportation, field trips, healthy snacks, family nights with supper and any enrichment activities that will benefit the students and families. These will begin in October and run through May.
The Grant Coordinators, explained the three components of the after school program called, “Kate’s CafÃ?Â?Ã?©” (Children and Families Excel)Ã?¢Ã?Â?Ã?¯in a separate presentation to parents. The components include, “Reading and Math Achievers” (academic help and homework help), “Enrichment” (baking, jump roping, community trips, sports, technology, etc.) and “Lighted Schoolhouse Nights” (Families enjoy supper and then family activities one night a month).
During the evening, parents and their children could sample a meal prepared by the new food service provider. The meal was made possible through the grant.
Door prizes provided by local businesses were awarded at the end of the program.
