Merrill Area Public Schools (MAPS) received the unexpected resignation of band instructor, Matt Callope, due to personal reasons. His resignation was approved by the Board of Education on Tuesday, Jan. 7, 2014.
According to a statement from MAPS Superintendent Wally Leipart, prior to his resignation, Callope was placed on non-disciplinary administrative leave at the end of Friday, Jan. 3, 2014. This action was the result of receiving a complaint regarding Callope’s interaction with a current high school student.
This matter was immediately referred to law enforcement for investigation and at this time the Merrill Police Department has indicated that no illegal activity has been found involving Mr. Callope, Leipart noted.
The band position is being posted and a suitable candidate will be hired as soon as possible, Leipart said. “Our current band staff will continue to meet the needs of the program and students.”
