Woman dies after jumping from Center Avenue bridge

On Wednesday, Dec. 18, at 4:53 p.m., the Merrill Police Department responded to a report that a female had jumped from the Center Avenue bridge, which spans the Wisconsin River. A witness had seen the woman jump from the bridge.
Officers arrived at the scene and located a conscious 24-year-old Merrill woman lying on the ground below the north side of the bridge. Additionally, the woman told officers that she had intentionally jumped from the bridge. 
An examination of the scene revealed that the woman fell approximately 36 feet to the ground below.
The woman was transported directly to Aspirus Wausau Hospital by the Merrill Fire Department EMS.
The Merrill Police Department was contacted by Aspirus Hospital shortly after 10 p.m. Wednesday to inform them that the patient had died as a result of her injuries.
According to the Merrill Police Department, as the investigation into this event still has elements pending further action, no further information is available for release at this time.
