Stanley R. Smith, age 82, of Merrill, died Thursday, Nov. 14, 2013, at Artisan Assisted Living, Merrill.
Stan was born Feb. 25, 1931, in the Town of Scott, son of the late Leslie W. and Clara M. (Voigt) Smith. He married Doris ‘Dorrie’ Rostal on Feb. 27, 1960. She survives.
After graduating from Merrill Senior High School, Stan attended the University of Wisconsin – Steven Point. He served in the U.S. Army from 1953 until his honorable discharge in 1954 and was stationed in Korea where he was a tank operator. Thereafter Stan completed his education at UWSP. Stan was an agent with State Farm Insurance for over 40 years prior to retirement. He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, Merrill. Stan was a charter member with the Merrill Kiwanis Club. He was a member of the Merrill Silver M Club and was a Gold M recipient. Stan and his brother Les were the honorary captains at this year’s homecoming football game. Stan enjoyed camping, hunting, and gardening.
Survivors include his wife Dorrie Smith, Merrill; four daughters, Kaye Smith, Woodbury, MN, Anne (Mrs. Mark) Simon, Grosse Pointe Woods, MI, Judy Smith of Marshfield, and Sandy (Mrs. Ricardo) Giorgis of Circle Pines, MN; five grandchildren, Abigail, Jonathan, Mackenzie, Camryn, and Shailee; two sisters, Valencia Grunenwald, Merrill, and Verdelma Guest, Park Forest, IL; and one brother, Lester (Sharon) Smith, Racine. Stan is preceded in death by an infant brother, Bobby Ray Smith; and two brothers in law, Floyd Grunenwald and Jack Guest.
A private family memorial service was held at the Taylor-Stine Funeral Home, Merrill. Burial will take place in the Central Wisconsin Veterans Memorial Cemetery, King, WI.
