The Hatchet volleyball showed the maturation process of its young squad by knocking off a pair of GNC foes in the first two rounds of the playoffs last week.
Top-seeded Tomahawk blasted past #8 Lakeland in three sets on Thursday, then eliminated #5 Mosinee in a 25-17, 25-20, 21-25, 25-21 match on Saturday to capture the regional championship.
"(Mosinee) put pressure on us" THS coach Jerry Angle said. "The first game we were pretty much in control, but in the second game, after we got ahead, we started losing focus and gave them an opportunity to believe they could win. The third game they beat us up pretty badly, but in the fourth game the girls did a really good job of turning it around.
"Even though Mosinee did a good job defensively, we were a little more patient offensively. Alex (DuPlayee) and Anna (Nyberg) played really well, and Becca Doughty did a good job of controlling the tempo. Hanna Meyer did a really good job of hitting and attacking from the backcourt."
Regional title provisions came from: Nyberg (22 kills, 17 digs); Becca Doughty (39 assists, 10 d); DuPlayee (12 k, 4 blocks, 11 d); Hanna Meyer (7 k, 10 d); Hanna Doughty (3 k, 4 bl); Amanda Schneider (6 aces, 8 d); Emily Schneider (4 ac, 3 bl, 6 d); and Madeline Garrison (10 d).
Lakeland sweep
Tomahawk cruised to a 25-8, 25-17, 25-12 triumph over the T-Birds.
"We played really intense," Angle said. "We got them into a lot of passing problems with our serves. Offensively we did a really good job of keeping them off-balance. All our hitters did a really good job of attacking the ball.
"They have one good hitter in Abby Scharbarth, and we did a good job of containing her. All-in-all, it was a really great team effort."
Lakeland contributions were turned in by: Nyberg (22 k, 13 d); B. Doughty (4 ac, 38 as); Meyer (8 k, 3 ac, 3 bl, 5 d); DuPlayee (7 k, 3 ac, 9 d); A. Schneider (6 d); E. Schneider (5 bl); Garrison (3 d); H. Doughty (2 bl).
Tomahawk improved to 33-10 overall.
