On Tuesday, Jan. 21, 2025, just before 3 p.m., the Merrill Fire Department (MFD) and Merrill DNR Ranger were dispatched to a possible grass or brush fire due to the report of black smoke coming from a field north of Tri-Hi Transportation on Hwy. 107 northwest of Merrill in the Town of Merrill. According to a press release from the MFD, Brush-66, Enigne-61, and Med-61 responded immediately but quickly determined it was not a grass or brush fire, but “a large camper that was burning and was already mostly consumed by fire.”
“Brush-66 was used to fight the fire,” the release said. “The fire was extinguished efficiently despite the frigid cold weather.”
“With assistance from Lincoln County Sheriffs Office and the local DNR warden, it was determined that the resident of the camper was not home,” the MFD release said. “When the owner returned, he said he had just stoked the wood furnace prior to leaving. There were no injuries and the camper was a total loss. The official cause of the fire is undetermined, but likely attributed to the wood furnace. The owner/occupant was put up for the night at the AmericInn through the Merrill Firefighters’ Charities.”
