Space, space exploration featured at library programs

Posted
The past, present and future of the worlds around us - astronomy and space exploration - will be the focus of the next Words Worth Hearing series programs at T.B. Scott Library.

Mike Fischer of Wausau, a Solar System Ambassador for NASA and the Jet Propulsion Laboratory, gives two programs and a tour on Thursday, Oct. 14 at the library.

From 3:30-4:30 p.m., Fischer presents "Our Place," an overview of the solar system, the wonder of space, and fun ways to gain an appreciation of the worlds around us.

Our Place is fun for all ages, and designed especially to appeal to young children and families.

From 6:30-8 p.m., Mike presents "Getting Up There," a whirlwind tour of man's efforts to explore the vast unknown of space.

The history and possible future of manned projects from the 1960s Space Race to the space shuttle and international space station, and unmanned exploration with probes, rovers, and space telescopes will be discussed.

After 8 p.m., weather permitting, Fischer leads a Guided Tour of the Night Sky, pointing out the celestial features with which he's so familiar.

Mike Fischer, a resident of the Wausau area since 2009, has always been an avid lover of the outdoors. His interest in space and astronomy was rekindled when his oldest son expressed an interest in getting a telescope, and he enjoys instilling an interest in learning about science to young people of all ages.

The Solar System Ambassadors Program is a public outreach program of volunteers sponsored by the Jet Propulsion Laboratory, an operating division of the California Institute of Technology (Caltech) and a lead research and development center for NASA.

Refreshments, compliments of First Street Coffee Station and The Checkered Churn, will be available. Contact the library at 715-536-7191 for more information.
