Two Merrill wrestlers made their mark at the State Freestyle and Greco-Roman Championships on May 2 and 3, 2026, at the Woodside Dome in Wisconsin Dells.
Remington Skic claimed the State Greco-Roman title in the Junior 157-pound division, while Brant Suchocki earned runner-up honors in the 12U 135-pound Freestyle division.
“Both wrestlers represented Merrill well,” said Merrill Varsity Head Wrestling Coach Brian Suchocki. “The talent and skill level is high, and it’s awesome to get two wrestlers to place that high — especially considering we only had two enter the tournament.”
Remington Skic
Remington competed in both tournaments over the weekend, going 3-2 in Freestyle before turning in a dominant, undefeated run in Greco-Roman.
“Remington had two good tournaments,” Suchocki said. “In freestyle he just came up short of making the podium, getting three wins on the day.”
In Greco-Roman, Remington was a force from start to finish, winning all four matches to claim the Championship — three of them by technical fall.
“In Greco-Roman, Remington ran the table to take first place,” Suchocki said. “He had wins over Brady Valentine, Jason Saffert, Myles Leggett, and Brody Ernest.”
In the Championship match, Remington edged Brody Ernest of the Askren Wrestling Academy by decision, 10-7.
“In the Championship he got a late takedown to secure the victory,” Suchocki said.
The title comes with a significant reward: “Winning the tournament qualifies Remington to compete on the Wisconsin National Greco-Roman Dual Team, to compete in June,” Suchocki said. “That’s a great honor — to compete for our state against the best in the nation.”
Individual results — Junior Greco-Roman 157: Remington Skic placed 1st and scored 22.5 team points.
Individual results — Junior Freestyle 157: Remington Skic scored 10.5 team points.
Brant Suchocki
In the 12U Freestyle 135-pound division, Brant Suchocki put together an impressive run to the Championship match, winning his quarterfinal and semifinal bouts before falling in the final.
“In freestyle, Brant was able to make the finals by winning matches over Jacob Andersen of Amery and Hunter Iglinski of Mukwonago,” Suchocki said. “Brant had a great tournament. It was great for him to make the finals and wrestle well.”
Brant dominated his quarterfinal, taking down Jacob Andersen of the Amery Warriors by technical fall, 11-0, then pinned Hunter Iglinski of Mukwonago Wrestling Club in 1:45 in the semifinals to advance to the Championship match. He fell to Eli Grotelueschen of Dodgeland Youth Wrestling Club by technical fall, 15-4, to finish as runner-up.
