Shirley “Jean” (Hoffman) Mootz, 83 of Merrill, passed away on Sunday April 6, 2025, at Aspirus Merrill Hospital in comfort care. She was born on November 18, 1941 to Herman and Ivy (Gartmann) Hoffman.

Jean was united in marriage to David Mootz on December 15, 1962 to her high school sweetheart. Jean was a lifelong member of St. Stephen’s Church in Merrill.

Jean devoted her life to her husband, children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. Nothing brought her more joy than family gatherings. Her home was the hub for holidays, birthdays, and other occasions throughout the year. Her grandkids have so many wonderful memories from time spent at Grandma Jean’s, including sleepovers, chicken bingo, art projects, and outdoor activities. As they got older, she faithfully attended all of their school and sporting events. They’ll forever remember her sitting in the front row at their games, cheering them on, but mostly looking forward to hugs after their game was over!

Anyone who knew Jean would agree she had a big personality! She truly loved getting out and living her life. She always had a story to share and definitely kept people entertained and laughing. Everyone was always welcome to come to her home for a visit.

Her fun-loving spirit will truly be missed!

Surviving are her husband Dave, son Jim (Julie Semling) Mootz, and daughter Christy Dresen. Grandchildren: Jourdyn (Sam) Koebe, Nick (Sydney) Mootz, Chaz Mootz, Zach Mootz, Connor Mootz, Bryce Dresen, and Troy Mootz. Great-grandchildren: Quinn Koebe, Stella Mootz, and Jace Koebe. Sister-in-laws Sandy (Harvey) Hoffmann and Mary Downing, brother-in-laws Eugene Mootz and Alean (Butch) Diels and many nieces and nephews.

She is preceded in death by her parents Herman and Ivy Hoffman, brother Harvey Hoffman, sister Karen Diels, Sandy Spears, Sue Hoffman, and son-in-law Rob Dresen. Mother-in-law Marie (Schult) Mootz, father-in-law Reno Mootz, sister-in-laws Sandy Mootz, Charlotte Mootz, and brother-in-laws Leroy Mootz , James Downing and Ron Spears. Nephew Clark Downing.

The family would like to thank the Aspirus Hospital Merrill nurses and doctors for their care, compassion, and support while Jean was in their care.
