Sheriff’s, Clerk of Courts Offices warning residents of new “grand jury duty” scam

Posted

The Lincoln County Sheriff’s and Clerk of Courts Offices are warning area residents of a new phone scam being reported.
According to a Thursday, Jan. 29, 2026, post on the Sheriff’s Office Facebook page, over the previous several days, both offices had received numerous reports that individuals had received calls from scammers telling them they had missed “grand jury duty.”
The Sheriff’s Office said the scammers used the specific date of Monday, Jan. 12, “presumably in an attempt to make it sound urgent.”
“The number these calls are coming from is 715.814.3041, and when calling the number back, the answering machine/voicemail even identifies it as the ‘Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office,’” the Sheriff’s Office said. “We assure you, this is not us.”
The Sheriff’s Office provided several steps the public can take to protect themselves against scams, including recognizing typical signs of a scam, such as the call coming from a non-local number.

The number is “likely spoofed to begin with,” the Sheriff’s Office said, noting that the current scam uses a Mosinee number.
Scam calls may also come from individuals with “heavy accent(s),” the Sheriff’s Office added.
Individuals who believe they are receiving a scam call are encouraged to hang up and call the Sheriff’s Office at 715.536.6272.
“Though most of our truly ‘official’ business such as this would typically be conducted in-person, there are times we may contact you by telephone,” the Sheriff’s Office said. “We will completely understand your suspicion and the desire to protect yourself. When you hang up and call us back, you can be directed to the deputy/employee that is trying to contact you.”
The Sheriff’s Office also cautioned the public against sharing personal or financial information with anyone suspicious.
“As in all things, stay vigilant,” the Sheriff’s Office said.
