Posted

A fifth-place finish in the final GNC Meet at Inshalla C.C. on Friday matched the Hatchets' team place for the season, but a tie for fifth individually for Troy Salewske gave him a one-point margin for GNC Player of the Year honors.

"Congratulations to Troy," THS coach Garth Gerstenberger said.

Salewske shot a 40-38-78 to pace the team. Joe Hinz (44-42-86) pulled off a Second Team finish, and Ole Hanson (40-46-86) matched his total. Troy Timm (43-45-88) and Alex Tollison (46-43-89) also competed.

Rhinelander completed a perfect team season sweep for 49 points and had the top three golfers on the day, including a 37-36-73 from meet medalist Bobby Montgomery and 75's from GNC runner-up AJ Berrell and Josh Willis.

Rhinelander's 304 bested Medford (313), Antigo (316), Mosinee (322), Tomahawk (338), Northland Pines (358) and Lakeland (390). Medford's runner-up finish allowed the Raiders to leapfrog the Hatchets on the season.

Team standings-Rhinelander 49, Antigo 35, Mosinee 32.5, Medford 30, Tomahawk 28.5, Pines 14, Lakeland 7.

GNC #6

Antigo edged Tomahawk for 4th by a single stroke 357-358 in last Tuesday's leg at Rhinelander's Northwoods.

"As a team we played well on the front nine and really struggled on the back," Gerstenberger said. "The greens were quick and that gave us a few problems as well."

Salewske tied for 5th overall with a 39-43-82. Hanson (43-46-89), Timm (44-46-90), Hinz (44-53-97) and Tollison (56-55-111) participated.

Mosinee's Kyle Kolberg (38-39-77) took top honors, edging Willis by a stroke.

Rhinelander shot 328 to undercut Medford (333), Mosinee (348), Antigo, Tomahawk, Pines (387) and Lakeland (437).
